California Window Tint Film Laws

Window tinting installation is meant to IMPROVE a vehicle for the better. While we at TINT MY RIDE feel that no car, truck, or SUV should go without these protective efforts, there are still plenty of rules of the road that we have to abide by in order to stay compliant with the legalities of the street. Here is a brief look into the rules and regulations required by the state of California in regards to window tint films:

Unique to California especially, you must keep your window tint film on ONLY the top 4 inches of your windshield, and that window tint strip must be completely non-reflective. The rear windshield of any car, truck, or SUV can be completely tinted with a film of any darkness, along with the back driver and passenger side windows. Front driver and passenger side windows must allow up to 70% of visible light transmission, with aftermarket tint films allowing up to 88% visible light transmission.

The regulations around tint reflectiveness are simple here in California. No window tint film can be any more reflective than the original reflectivity of your factory glass on any car, truck, or SUV. We at TINT MY RIDE profess integrity and knowledge into our specific window tint film packages, so you as the customer do not have to worry whether your vehicle is abiding by the law of the land or not. Get Answers About Our SolarFX Window Tint Films - TINT MY RIDE

  • What are the legal window tint limits in California for sedans, SUVs, and trucks?

California has specific regulations under Vehicle Code Section 26708 that vary based on the window’s position and the type of vehicle.

Front side windows: Must allow 70% light transmission (i.e., only lightly tinted if using aftermarket film).

Windshield: Only top 4 inches may be tinted (visor strip) with non-reflective film.

Back side windows & rear window: Any darkness is allowed on SUVs, vans, and trucks. Sedans also have no restrictions for rear windows, but dual side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.

Reflective film and color restrictions: Mirror-like or red/amber/blue tint is not legal.

  • Is it worth paying more for professional window tint installation in California, or should I consider DIY kits?

Professional installers ensure compliance with state law, precise edge-to-edge coverage, and bubble-free results using computer-cut film.

Professionals often provide a warranty (lifetime or 5–10 years) and use higher-grade films (like ceramic or carbon).

DIY kits may save upfront cost but often result in visible flaws, legal non-compliance, and shorter durability.

In California’s sunny climate, poor-quality film will fade or peel faster, making professional work a smarter investment.

  • How does ceramic window tint compare to dyed or metallic films in hot California climates?

California’s high UV index and summer heat lead customers to seek superior heat rejection without compromising visibility or signal clarity.

Ceramic tint blocks up to 99% of UV rays and significantly reduces infrared heat (IR rejection) — key for keeping interiors cooler.

Unlike metallic films, ceramic doesn’t interfere with cellular, GPS, or radio signals.

More durable and fade-resistant than dyed films.

Higher cost, but long-term savings in AC usage, interior fading prevention, and driver comfort.

  • Do window tint films need pro detailing when they need to be cleaned?

With any protective effort you take for your automobile here in Fresno, California, we at TINT MY RIDE always encourage our valued customers to consider what is best for their investment! It doesn’t hurt to have a professional exterior vehicle detailer look at your window tint films when cleaning your ride once a month to avoid using any harmful cleaning agents.

  • WHAT DOES (IR) INFRARED REJECTION MEAN FOR MY VEHICLE?

IR refers to Infrared Rejection, he measure of how well a film blocks infrared (IR) radiation, a type of heat-carrying energy from the sun, from passing through. It's a key factor in determining how effectively a window film can keep a space cool and comfortable, with higher IR rejection percentages indicating better heat reduction.

Window tint films repel UV rays and the general intensity solar engird entering your vehicle.

As a result, it helps keeps your vehicle’s interior from trapping intense heat inside its cab, making your driving experience much more pleasant.
